How to read the Bible with your child
Simple, gentle ways to read the Bible with young children — at bedtime, at breakfast, or in the car.
Keep it short
Five minutes is enough. One story, one verse, one question. A small, unhurried habit lasts longer than an ambitious plan.
Start with stories
Children remember stories before they remember lessons. Begin with Noah, David, Jonah, and the stories of Jesus, then talk about what the story shows us about God.
Read Scripture out loud
After telling a story in your own words, read its key verse straight from the Bible, with the book, chapter and verse. Children learn that God’s word is something we can open and find.
Ask, don’t lecture
Try: “How do you think they felt?” “What does this show us about God?” “What could we do today?” Let silence sit for a moment.
End with a short prayer
Turn the story into a sentence of prayer: “Thank You, God, for keeping Your promises.”
Let them watch and listen
Illustrated, narrated stories can help little ones stay with a passage. Watch one together, then open the Bible to the same chapter.
